Captain Awesome asked:
i need instructions on how to make an automated mirror site to my blog. the server is too small to serve our needs, and upgrading to a bigger server is too expensive. so the mirror site needs to be automatically updated whenever i update my blog. that way whenever the site goes down, readers can be redirected to the mirror site, and i have the advantage of having a backup site without the hassle of running 2 sites.

It’s been years since I’ve done this, but the answer is two-part, as is the question.
First, if you want your site to go to the mirror if the first one is down, I believe that that is done when putting in the secondary dns of your site. If the primary dns is non-responsive it should go to the secondary dns.
Secondly, for uploading to two sites, I keep it simple. I have two ftp softwares open, and when I upload to one I simply upload to the other right away. This is fine for a static site or even a dynamic one, but not for a database, as overwritting a DB can be dangerous. However, if you are using a DB, you can create a trigger on certain or all tables linked to a pl/sql which can allow you to send the information to the other database.

uh wait?
the first server is too small to handle a blog?
even a 386 server running linux could easily handle 100 of those….
and you can’t afford another one, but you have one to copy the original site too?
doesn’t make sense.
i agree with eric on the dns part, but if you can’t handle a 4.95/month host for a blog, no way are you gonna run your own dns server.
as for mirroring the blog, it would depend on what saoftware was running on both ends, your ability to run a shell and cron jobs on at least one side, and how often you needed it updated (every minute? every day? instantly?)
seriously, there are free web hosts (000freewebhost.com comes to mind) that can handle your blogging needs just fine….
As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you want to start your business website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today. They also offer “Free Site Builder” that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program. (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get). Some of these companies also offer hundreds of various customizable templates.
Take a look at: There you can reach the three reputable companies that are leaders in the E-commerce web hosting industry. You can also refer to the following links to get useful information regarding your question:
If you’re going to start your ecommerce website with GoldPuma, you must select their Deluxe Web Hosting Package (Not economy package which is suitable for personal websites). You can take a look at their “Marketing Tools” menu to get useful information regarding their ecommerce products.
Hope this helps.
